Are you looking to build a WordPress website? Not sure where to start or what steps to take? You’re in the right place. In this article, we will show you how to build a WordPress website in 10 easy steps.
Building a WordPress website is easy, even for beginners. However, there are still a few things you need to do before you can start building your site. In this article, we will cover those pre-steps and then jump into how to build a WordPress website step by step.
Assuming you have already taken care of the pre-steps, let’s get started on how to build a WordPress website.
Step 1: Choose a domain name and hosting
Your domain name is your website’s address on the internet. It’s what people will type in to find your site. For example, ours is wpbuffs.com.
To choose a good domain name, brainstorm a few ideas, and then check to see if they’re available using a domain name checker like this one from WordPress.
Once you’ve found an available domain name, you’ll need to purchase it and set up hosting. Hosting is where your website lives on the internet. Think of it like renting a plot of virtual land where you can build your house (website).
We recommend using WordPress-specific hosting like WP Engine or Flywheel. They’re slightly more expensive than regular hosting providers, but they provide great features specifically for WordPress websites, like staging areas and site backups.
If you want to use a regular hosting provider like Bluehost or SiteGround, that’s fine too. Just know that you might have to install a few extra steps to get all the features WP Engine or Flywheel provides “out of the box.”
Step 2: Set up WordPress
The first thing you need to do is set up WordPress on your hosting account. If you’re not sure how to do this, don’t worry – it’s actually very easy.
There are two ways to set up WordPress: through a hosting provider, or by downloading the software from WordPress.org and installing it yourself.
If you want to set up WordPress yourself, the best way to do it is by downloading the software from WordPress.org. This way, you’ll have full control over your website and can customize it however you want.
Once you’ve downloaded the software, all you need to do is follow the instructions on the WordPress website to install it on your hosting account.
If you want to set up WordPress through a hosting provider, they will usually have a one-click installation process that will take care of everything for you. All you need to do is select WordPress from a list of options and they will handle the rest.
Once WordPress is installed, you can start working on Step 3: Choose a Theme.
Step 3: Choose a WordPress theme
There are two types of WordPress themes: free and premium. Most of the time, we recommend choosing a premium theme because it will give you more features and customization options. Plus, it will be easier to use and faster to set up.
That being said, there are some great free WordPress themes available if you’re on a budget. We have a list of some of the best free WordPress themes here.
Once you’ve selected your theme, it’s time to install it on your WordPress site.
Step 4: Install plugins
After you’ve installed WordPress and gotten familiar with the dashboard, it’s time to start installing plugins. Plugins are pieces of software that add functionality to your website, and there are thousands of them available for free.
There are plugins for just about everything, from contact forms to ecommerce platforms. To find plugins, go to the WordPress Plugin Directory and search for what you need. Once you’ve found a plugin you want to install, hover over it and click “Install Now.”
You can also install plugins directly from your WordPress dashboard. To do this, go to Plugins > Add New and search for the plugin you want to install. Once you’ve found it, click “Install Now.”
Once the plugin has been installed, you’ll need to activate it. To do this, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins and find the plugin in the list. Then click “Activate.”
Step 5: Create pages and posts
5. Create pages and posts
Next, you need to start creating content for your website. In WordPress, this content is divided into two types: pages and posts.
Pages are the static content on your website, like your About or Contact page. Posts are dynamic and blog-like, meant to be published regularly and in chronological order.
You can create both pages and posts from the WordPress admin dashboard by going to Pages » Add New or Posts » Add New.
Step 6: Add multimedia
You can upload images, audio, and videos from the Media Library. To add media, click on the “Add Media” button. You can either upload a file from your computer, or you can select one from the Media Library.
Once you’ve selected the file, you can add a title, caption, description, and alternate text. You can also choose to align the media to the left, center, or right of the page, or you can choose to have it display in its original size.
If you’re uploading an image, you can also select whether to have it link to another page or file, or you can have it open in a new window.
Step 7: Configure WordPress settings
The next thing you need to do is configure your WordPress settings. This can be done by going to the “Settings” tab in the left-hand menu bar and selecting “General.” On this page, you will need to fill in some basic information about your website, such as the title, tagline, time zone, and date format. Once you have finished filling out this information, click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page.
Step 8: Promote your WordPress website
Assuming you’ve completed all the previous steps, by now you should have a pretty solid WordPress website. The next logical step is to start promoting your site and driving traffic to it. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
-Submit your site to search engines: This will ensure that people can find your site when they search for relevant keywords.
-Add social media sharing buttons:Make it easy for visitors to share your content on social media.
-Create compelling content: Publish high-quality content that will encourage people to visit your site and come back for more.
-Start a blog: A blog is a great way to generate fresh content and attract new visitors.
-Participate in forums and discussion groups: Share your expert knowledge and connect with potential customers.
-Advertise online: Invest in online advertising to reach a wider audience.
